Since the establishment of the EPF in 1962, the coverage of EPF has grown significantly. While until 1978, its coverage was limited only to the government and semi-government organizations. That year its scope was extended to cover all public school teachers and the employees employed in these schools. The Sixth amendment of the EPF Act in February, 1991 further broadened the coverage and allowed membership to employees of private enterprises including: private schools, universities, diplomatic missions and non-governmental organizations employing at least ten staffs on permanent basis. Current membership to the EPF stands at 400,000 (i.e. 2.50% of total active population) members and it is growing gradually. The sector-wise distribution of membership is as follows:
